Croatia replaces kuna currency with the euro

On January 1^st, 2023, Croatia became the 20^th member of the eurozone, replacing its kuna with the euro. The kuna can be used alongside the euro until January 15^th, before being completely replaced by the euro. The kuna will be exchanged at a conversion rate of €1 to HRK7.5. According to the European Commission 70% of ATMs in the country already distribute euros.

Croatia has chosen four designs for their national sides of the euro coins, all featuring the distinctive Croatian chequerboard pattern in the background. All the coins also depict the 12 stars of the European flag.

EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen commented: “Congratulations to Croatia on this historic double achievement of joining the euro area and the borderless Schengen zone.

“The euro will bring great economic and social benefits to Croatia’s people and businesses. It will lower barriers for companies, reduce costs for importers and exporters – leading to more choice and better prices for consumers. Together with Schengen membership, adopting the euro will give an extra boost to Croatia’s crucial tourism sector.”
